YouTube is changing how Shorts are recommended, with original content receiving stronger priority and simple reuploads from other creators expected to receive less distribution.

YouTube is changing Shorts recommendation priorities

In an official TeamYouTube update published October 1, 2026, YouTube said its recommendation systems are being adjusted to further prioritize original content. Channels that primarily aggregate or re-upload other creators’ videos without significant changes are likely to see lower distribution in the Shorts feed.

YouTube says creators who use clips from other people should add meaningful value through original commentary, unique editing or storytelling rather than relying on minor technical changes.

What this means for music marketing

The update is important for artists and labels because Shorts is a major discovery surface for songs. A campaign built mostly around duplicated video assets across multiple channels may now face a weaker recommendation environment if the uploads add little original value.

That does not mean music reuse or remix culture is disappearing. YouTube still supports Shorts remix tools and licensed music workflows. The distinction is between genuinely transformative creative use and low-effort duplication.

How artists and labels should adapt

Music teams should build multiple creative angles around the same song rather than repeatedly posting near-identical clips. Performance footage, behind-the-scenes context, lyric explanations, creator collaborations, dance interpretations and story-led edits can all give the same recording a different reason to be recommended.

For labels managing large catalogs, the update also increases the value of creator strategy. Distribution alone is not enough; the content around a track needs a recognizable point of view.
