Reservoir Media announced the acquisition of jazz composer Billy Strayhorn’s publishing catalog in October 2026, while expanding its work with the Strayhorn estate to include participation in name, image and likeness rights. Financial terms were not disclosed.

What rights are covered?

Music publishing governs copyrights in compositions, distinct from ownership of every recorded performance. The deal also provides an additional commercial relationship with the estate surrounding Strayhorn’s identity and legacy. It should not be described as the purchase of every master recording of a Strayhorn composition.

Why Billy Strayhorn’s catalog matters

Strayhorn’s compositions have reached audiences across jazz and other musical styles. Works such as “Lush Life” retain cultural value through reinterpretation, recording and licensing. A publishing company can support new legitimate uses of such a repertoire while preserving accurate songwriter attribution.

How this fits the catalog investment market

Reservoir has worked with the estate since 2014. This latest deal shows that ongoing relationships can lead to expanded rights administration and commercial exploitation. Revenue potential remains uncertain without financial terms and documented future licensing activity.
